It was just over a year ago when some of the largest slaughterhouses in the region began to temporarily close their doors after COVID-19 outbreaks.
Those closures meant local farmers faced the prospect of having nowhere to send their livestock for processing, and no way to get their food to market. When Sazzy Calhoun of East Bethel, Minn., heard those stories, she decided to do something to help.
A year ago this week, Calhoun started Farm Direct Minnesota, a Facebook group to connect farmers directly to consumers. The group now has more than 56,000 members. She talked with MPR News host Cathy Wurzer about the project.
