On a windy Wednesday morning, July 7, 2021, the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Alder make its final trip under Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge as it set sail for Baltimore, Maryland.
The Alder arrived in the Twin Ports in October 2004, replacing the Sundew, which was decommissioned in 2004. The Alder will make its final trip through the Great Lakes to Baltimore, Maryland, for a year of maintenance before it is transferred to San Francisco, its new homeport.
Another 225-foot buoy tender, the USCG Spar, will replace the Alder in spring of 2022.
